As an adolescent, he became fascinated with the arts and at seventeen began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The year 1901 marked the artist’s first exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Francais of one of his works, a dramatic Paris street scene at dusk, which brought him immediate fame.

Later, as an active member of the prestigious Societe des Artistes Francais, Cortes exhibited his works yearly in Paris at the Society’s salon as well as at the Salon des Independants, and the Salon de l’Hiver. With the tremendous success that his Paris street scenes brought him during his lifetime, Cortes continues to delight art-lovers today and is considered to be one of the greatest masters of French impressionism.

Edouard Cortes’ paintings express the romance, energy and charm of old Paris through his masterly application of bold brush strokes and intriguing colors. His works display the profound knowledge he held of perspective and composition; and, the viewer’s eye is most often caught by fascinating details – the play of lights on wet pavement, shadows on streets and glowing windows and street lamps. On any one of Cortes’ canvases, one can find an array of tones ranging from soft gray hues and ambers to vivid reds, yellows and oranges. A splash of purple may be a man’s tailored dinner jacket or a stroke of blue, a woman’s cloak. The viewer cannot help but marvel at the overall effect of the artist’s composition.

After a life long dedication to seizing the magic of Paris during its transition from the romantic belle epoque to the modern, twentieth century capital as we know it, Cortes has left the world a legacy of master paintings. Now found in most prestigious collections throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, South America and Japan, his work continues to awe the world.

Edouard Cortes died in 1969.

AlphaNautical Gallery is proud to carry one of the finest Cortes collections including both Paris street scenes and other art with a water-related theme.

Biography of Bela Bodo(Hungarian, b. 1936) Born in...

Biography of Bela Bodo

(Hungarian, b. 1936)

Born in Budapest in 1936 to a very artistic family, Bela Bodo was ushered into the world of art at birth – his father was an artist, his mother a noted writer and his grandfather a renowned sculptor whose works still stand in Budapest’s public squares and sites. Beginning with lessons in classical piano and art at a young age, Bodo went on to study at the Budapest Academy. There, under the instruction of such eminent professors as Barcasy, Szony and Szlai he lay a solid academic foundation in art. During this period in Bodo’s life, his father was engaged in museum restoration work, thus the young artist had easy access to study the very finest of old master works. Bodo’s education was completed through private tutoring sessions with Hungary’s foremost artist, Istvan Csok.

In hopes of escaping Hungary’s ever widening web of communism, Bodo made three attempts to leave his homeland before actually succeeding. Along with 2,000 other refugees, the young artist boarded a U.S. naval transport headed for New York and nearly lost his life when he was swept overboard during a tumultuous storm in the North Sea. Destiny, however, had far greater plans for him in America.

The incident brought Bodo instant notoriety as the "saved artist" and he was overwhelmed with orders for paintings for the remainder of the voyage. Thus, he landed at New York with more money in his pocket than ever before. Since then, Bodo’s success as a painter has not ceased to grow.

Bela Bodo’s dream like paintings bring to mind the canvases of the great impressionist masters who painted under Giverny’s skies a century ago. His soothing compositions depict blooming meadows, colorful European gardens, beautiful young ladies lounging in lace trimmed dresses, and quaint scenes of California’s coastline: Cambria, Carmel, Pebble Beach, and Hearst Castle. In a style unlike any other living impressionist painter, Bodo combines, with the classical techniques of impressionism, the grace of romanticism and the spontaneity of the fauvists and divisionists. No less than eighteen colors grace his palette, giving his works an overall dazzling effect.

Today, Bela Bodo cherishes his hard won freedom by bringing joy to many through his highly sought after paintings.

AlphaNautical Gallery is pleased to carry the beautiful original art of Bela Bodo!

Biography of Bruce Bitter(American, N/A)Bruce Bitt...

Biography of Bruce Bitter

(American, N/A)

Bruce Bitter grew up on the New Jersey shore and has been depicting the beach in his work for over 25 years. His frequent travels to the Caribbean and other beach locales inspired him to continue this genre.Today all of his art is in the medium of Pastel, but with his own special style described below. He currently lives in Austin,Texas with his wife and son.

B.F.A. I then proceed with one of two techniques to create an under painting as a foundation for the pastels. Using a silkscreen, I paint with silkscreen inks directly on the screen as if it was a canvas……Working quickly to keep the inks moist, establishing large areas of color. I then push the inks through the screen with a squeegee onto the paper. This gives me an image with a smooth surface to apply the pastels to, The second technique is to paint directly on to the drawing using pure pigments and printing inks. This leaves me with a more textured surface to apply pastel to. Although realistic in nature I rely on color and the pastel mark to interpret my final result. I then crop and cut the piece and adhere it to another sheet of paper.. My beach pieces have always been playful in nature thus the added collage material along the bottom. A hand drawn fish and a tropical posrtage stamp. My work is all ORIGINAL and I have NO reproductions made of my work."

AlphaNautical Gallery is pleased to announce an EXCLUSIVE agreement with pastel artist Bruce Bitter. If the title is not known, we will attempt to assign a title and will make a caveat in the description of the painting that this was a title assigned by the Gallery Director.
b) Any information or copies of paperwork to prove the authenticity of the painting. If this painting is listed in the Provenance of the Artist, please include this information. However, in most cases, it will suffice to detail the family ownership history. This category is normally acquired by museums and major collections. This art is very rare and normally only sold by online auction or Private Placement (PP). All auction and Private Placement pieces are on an exclusive consignment for the period of the 30 day auction or private placement. We request that the painting to be available for a couple of weeks before the auction or Private Placement begins in order to properly promote the sale. As expected with this quality of art, all pieces are sold with a PROVENANCE (History of Ownership) and a Certificate of Authenticity (From a qualified and listed person or agency). It would be normal to find this painting in the CATALOG RAISONNE of the artist. AlphaNautical offers a special personal (worldwide) pick-up and delivery service for a flat fee of $5000 including all crating and travel expenses.

"Water-related" fine art is often called "nautical...

"Water-related" fine art is often called "nautical art", "marine art" or "seascapes".

The most common subjects in "water-related" fine art include scenes of beaches, coastal shorelines, boats, ships, bridges, creeks, streams, rivers, canals, bays, seas, oceans, fountains, lighthouses, ponds, lakes, ports, harbors, seascapes, seaside villages, tropical settings with water, Mediterranean settings with water, waterfalls, and similar scenes.
